Police said Jayakumar was caught taking the money from an accused, Kannan, in an abduction case. The inspector had promised to help Kannan wriggle his way out of the case. A special team of DVAC set a trap by giving chemical-coated notes to Kannan and hand it over to the inspector.
When Jayamkumar took the money from the accused, DVAC sleuths caught the former red-handed. Kannan is accused of abducting a couple at Koovathur near Mahabalipuram. In January 2016, Kannan had contacted Suresh Babu, a resident of Puzhal, who was interested in buying gold at a rate lesser than the market price.
Kannan had told the couple that he had gold worth Rs 18 lakh and had agreed to meet the man at Koovathur. Kannan asked Babu to come to a specific place to execute the deal. When Babu arrived with his wife at the spot, Kannan and five others abducted the couple and robbed them of their cash.
They also detained the couple. The police after investigations rescued the couple and arrested the accomplices but Kannan managed to escape. Puzhal police registered a case and Kannan, who was on the run, secured an anticipatory bail. During investigation, inspector Jayakumar struck a deal and assured to free Kannan from the case if he paid Rs 2.5 lakh as bribe.
Kannan informed DVAC DSP Udaya Shankar and subsequently lodged a complaint, following which, a 10-member team conducted an inquiry. Then the team laid a trap and caught Jayakumar.
