The workshop was awarded the bronze rating after getting 350 marks out of 1,000. Higher ratings include silver, gold and platinum, officials added. According to workshop deputy chief mechanical engineer Muthu Kumar, “The initiative was part of a strategy announced by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in the 2016 railway budget when it was decided to opt for green initiatives to save resources.”

Initially, the Carriage and Wagon workshop and ICF, both based in Chennai, and the Varanasi based Diesel Locomotive Works were chosen for the project on a pilot basis following the railways signing an MoU with CII in July 2016, he added.

“CII undertook the intensive exercise based on nine parameters including energy and water conservation, renewable energy, greenhouse gas emission, waste management, material conservation, green supply chain, recycling and innovations, all of which contributed to the units performance on the green front” according to SR’s chief public relations officer TP Dhananjayan.

“CII’s GreenCo rating system, the first of its kind in the world is a framework for the holistic assessment and analysis of a company’s performance on the green front. About 200 companies are presently working on the GreenCo rating while 78 have been rated with 27 having achieved an annual combined savings of Rs 54.30 crore,” Dhananjayan added.

Muthu Kumar said, “The ISO 9001 accredited workshop handles all coach types including the new LHB coaches and wagons for overhaul and repairs.” The unit now handles 2,146 coaches and 3,135 wagons every year, he added.
