The police identified the deceased as Shakthi, daughter of Sivalingam, studying in Class 12. Shakthi was expecting to score top marks in the examinations, but was stressed about her performance which lead her to commit suicide, police said.
The teen studied in a private state board school in Egmore, where the principal and teachers were expecting her to top the school in the board exams.
Inspector Vijaya Rangan said, “Shakthi was a student of the Commerce group and was under immense mental stress due to the exams. We believe that her parents never caused her any stress. She had written in her suicide note that she was a bright student and everyone had high expectations from her.
She wrote that something disturbed her during her preparations but she did go into the details about what it was. According to the suicide note, Shakthi couldn’t concentrate on her studies and went blank during the examination. She felt she wouldn’t be able to meet the expectations placed on her and was upset about it.”
Shakthi had two older brothers who are married and her father who works as a photographer. She locked herself in a room on Thursday evening while her parents were out and hung herself.
The incident came to light, at 6.35 pm, when her parents returned home. The body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. The police have filed a case and are conducting further investigations.
