Justice N Kirubakran while hearing a plea moved by Trichybased SVI college of Education challenging denial of increase in students’ intake for its B.Ed and M.Ed courses in his order, said, “It is a bitter reality that even the State government is not bothered about the steep increase in the number of institutions being permitted by National Council for Teacher Education’s (NCTE) southern unit.”
Also, observing that the state is witnessing a mushrooming of teachers training institutes, said, “The reason for the prevailing poor standard in education is that many of the present teachers themselves had obtained diplomas/degrees from letter pad teacher training institutes without any infrastructure and regular classes being held. It is due to commercialisation of education.”
The judge on impleading the NCTE, directed it to submit details pertaining to number of teacher training institutes, the number of unemployed teacher training graduates and diploma-holders. Further, the Judge directed NCTE and the Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University to answer the court’s queries by the next hearing on March 27.
