As per the new scheme, schools will have to follow a two-semester system which, according to CBSE, is to enable students become more confident before they sit for their Class 10 board examinations. A uniform system of assessment will be implemented from class 6 onwards where two periodic tests of 10 marks each will also be conducted every semester.

“I personally feel that it is a good move. Till now, students worked on activities and other projects in lower grades and there was hardly any sense of competition among them. These examinations slated to be held from Class 6 onwards will help them prepare well for the board exams. This will also act as a stress buster and relieve the students from taking too much stress before the Class 10 board exams start,” said Shynu John, Principal of the Alpha School in  Porur.

A few parents too think that this move will help their children in the long run. “A sense of competition is always good. My son who is now writing the board exams, used to be stressed all the time. The board examinations are all about time management and this can only be perfected through years of practise. If the children are introduced to such exercises from a very young age, this will help them tackle athe board exams in the future,” said Maheshwari K, a resident of Mylapore.

However, a few other parents have raised concerns over the added stress for students. “There is already a lot of stress that the children have to go through. The two-semester system will only add to it. When they are younger, they should pursue extracurricular activities. Exam pressure will curb that time for the children because parents will add undue pressure on the kids,” said Anju Priya, another parent.
