Port receives only 50 container trucks

PV Subramani, president, Chennai Goods and Transport Association (CGTA) told DTNext, “Over 400 trucks usually arrive at Chennai port, but this has steadily declined to 50. Only those trucks which have signed agreements with shipping companies are approaching the port.” 

He added that ministers from the Centre would hold talks with representatives from lorry owners’ associations on Monday. 

Similarly, Murugan, general secretary of Tamil Nadu Lorry Owners Federation, said, “The strike is on in other states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. So, there is a possibility that movement of goods and parcel services to Chennai port and other areas would be crippled, to some extent,” he added. 

Meanwhile, a staff at the port, said, “If the current situation persists, it will impact the Chennai and Tuticorin ports to a great extent.” Very few trucks have arrived at the port in the last two days, the staff added.
