Drag racing duo hit women on RK Salai; 1 dead, another hurt

Bike racing in the city on Sunday claimed a woman’s life and injured another on Radhakrishnan Salai. Police arrested both the underage driver and the pillion rider. The duo was overspeeding on a Pulsar motorbike when they lost control and knocked down the women, who were crossing the road.

Police said Meena (52), wife of Balakrishnan, a resident of Mylapore and Yasodha (58), wife of Ezhumalai, also a resident of Mylapore, were trying to cross the road in front of Kalyani Hospital, when a speeding bike proceeding towards the beach from the Gemini Flyover side hit them. Both the women were rushed to the hospital. 

The impact of the accident was such that even the bikers were thrown off their vehicle, but didn’t suffer injuries. The public caught the duo and handed them over to the police. 

Police said Meena succumbed at the hospital at 10 pm and Yasodha is still undergoing treatment. Her limbs are broken. Cops said a 16-year-old, son of Mohammed Salim, was riding the bike. Prabhu (19), son of Jayakumar, was riding pillion. 

Police said both the youths reside in Alwarthirunagar. The accused were later produced before the magistrate court. Police have collected CCTV footage from the area and further investigation is on.
