Patient, driver die as ambulance hits lorry

In a tragic mishap, an 80-year-old woman, who was being shifted in an ambulance after treatment from Kanniyakumari to Chennai, was killed after the ambulance driver rammed the vehicle into a container lorry parked on the Bengaluru National Highway on Monday. The driver also died in the accident.

The Koyambedu police said that the ambulance rammed into the parked container lorry at 7 am near the MGR University and that the driver Jordan could have dozed  off leading to the mishap. The family was heading to Mogappair West to the house of the ailing woman’s son.

“Initial investigations revealed that driver could have dozed off behind the wheel and lost control of the vehicle,” a police official said. The deceased woman has been identified as Mary and was accompanied by her daughter Mary Elizabeth Jaya from Arumbakkam who along with ambulance assistant   Anand of Shenoy Nagar sustained injuries. 

While Jordan, who was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, died without responding to treatment, Anand is undergoing treatment at the same hospital. Police have booked a case against the lorry driver Udhasthir Singh (58) from Bihar as heavy vehicles are not allowed to be parked on highways.
