The idea is a community driven initiative towards litter-free, eco-friendly and pedestrian friendly Mada streets said K Viswanathan, Organiser, Kapaleecharam Committee. “A 30-member team was deployed, including the employees of Ramky Enviro Engineers and Corporation officials.
We started from the North Mada Street and cleared garbage and debris. The private deployed an automatic vacuum cleaning lorry to clear trash from the main roads. If the streets are well maintained, people will think twice before littering,” he said.
KL Balasubramanian, a volunteer with Kapaleecharam, said the residents wanted to engage with Ramky in a big way. “The trash mainly included plastic, paper, mud and bricks. The automatic machine saved time. We ensured that the staff had protective gear and equipment. We also campaigned among the shopkeepers and many of them have put out bins,” he said. The next step, said Viswanathan, involved the commercial businesses in the locality.
“We want to understand their average daily waste generation and how well we can manage that without the trash getting on to the road side. We have impressed that every commercial establishment or residential unit needs to maintain the front end, which also includes the road, to keep it clean and add some greenery,” he concluded.
