Police said they intercepted a SUV car around midnight and the driver Abdul Hamid gave contradictory answers to their queries. On suspicion, the police checked the vehicle documents and found them to be fake. Following this, the cops grilled him. During interrogation, Abdul Hamid confessed that he hailed from Valliyur Taluk in Tirunelveli district and involved in re-sale of stolen cars along with two others — Nallaiyan and Augustin. The trio used to buy used cars for a cheap price and sold it in the market with fake documents.
While Nallaiyan and Augustin were arrested last month in vehicle theft cases, Abdul Hamid remained elusive till he was caught. Following Abdul Hamid’s confession, the police officials recovered two Tavera cars, two Indica cars and a Tata Sumo kept hidden in Pallavaram.
It may be recalled that Tirumangalam police arrested two call taxi drivers — Veerakumar (26) of Oddanchatram in Dindigul district, and Dhamodharan (22), of Bengaluru — for stealing cars and selling them in other cities and states earlier in June.
