Police said Sanjay (32) and Sandeep (44), natives of New Delhi, reached Chennai along with two other men by air. They snatched chains from women in various parts of the city. After noticing a spurt in chain snatching incidents in the city, the police decided to check if the crimes were committed by the same gang.
While scrutinizing the CCTV grabs from various crime spots, police found that a Pulsar bike was seen in most of the footage. The police traced the owner of the two-wheeler, who was later found to be a resident of Mylapore. He had sold the bike two months ago.
The police again focused on finding the bike and finally spotted it at a lodge located on the Walltax Road near Central station. After tracing it, police waited in disguise. When two people came to pick it up, they were arrested.
During investigation, both Sanjay and Sandeep had confessed to have committed several crimes in the city. Based on the information provided by them, police were on the look out for two others who had come with the duo. Their modus operandi was simple. Travel by flight to Chennai, stay for a few days, commit a spate of robberies, then fly back to Delhi, before repeating the act after a time gap. Police said the gang also stole gold chains in the city and sold them in Delhi.
