9 TPDK members held for animal cruelty

But the event took an ugly turn as police arrested nine of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) members under various sections including Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Though the event was scheduled to happen in front of the Sanskrit College in Mylapore at 10 am, the organisers changed the venue to Anna statue in Royapettah “at the request of police officials”. Around 11 am, two men were spotted taking a pig with a poonul on, but cops frisked the animal away.
Pigs sent to Blue Cross
Within minutes, two more men brought another pig, but were detained. Four pigs were seized from the organisers and sent it to Blue Cross.
“We requested only those who were ready to face police action to take part in the protest,” said Kumaran, Chennai district secretary of TPDK.
“Our intention is to oppose discrimination and I think we have made it clear. We have brought the pigs without violating any rules of animal safety and with a mouth mask on,” he added.
While police confirmed the arrest of nine men under sections 143, 147, 188 and 153 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and also under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, they refused that a pig died in the incident.
