Over 100 kg tobacco seized; 7-member gang arrested
In a crackdown on makers and sellers of banned tobacco products such as mawa, seven men were arrested in three different parts of the city and gutka and ingredients used in mawa weighing over 100 kg were seized.

Pallikaranai police on Tuesday raided a house at Kamatchi Nagar and arrested four men from Bihar, who had been involved in making ‘mawa’ tobacco in the city for over a year.
The accused has been identified as Anil Yadav (32). Govind Yadav (20), Lakshman Kumar (19) and Sathru Ban Baswan (20). Nearly 75 kilograms of ingredients such as jarda tobacco, three grinders and one mixie grinder and Rs 75,000 in cash were seized from the house. All four were remanded in judicial custody.
Meanwhile, Avadi police intercepted an autorickshaw during their routine vehicle check and found 15 kg of mawa tobacco being smuggled. Varadharajan and Murugan from Kodungaiyur who transported the banned product in the auto to Avadi were arrested and police are grilling the duo whom they were carrying it to.
On Monday, Ambattur police seized a huge consignment of gutka kept ready to be smuggled from a house at Vijayalakshmipuram. The 12 sacks of gutka have been evaluated to be worth more than Rs 1 lakh.
On specific information, a team led by the inspector raided the house around 1 pm and arrested Srinivasan (51). Rs 40,250 in cash was retrieved from him before he was remanded in judicial custody.
