Acting on a tip off that some banned drugs were stacked in the residence of the cab operator, Tamizhan, police searched his residence at Velacherry and seized Rs two crore cash - all under Rs 2000 denomination - from the bath tub of the house.
He owns a fleet of 200 cars which were rented out to software companies in Sholinganallur and Old Mahabalipuram Road. The Income Tax department has taken over the investigation into the cash seizure. Police sources said, ‘’We are waiting for the RBI clearance to conduct further investigation in the case. It is a regular procedure to scan the notes and send them to the nodal bank. They will ascertain if seized notes are fake and the vital details regarding the source of money.’’
He had already come under the I-T scanner and a case sheet on him was opened about two years ago. Police also said that the anonymous caller, who gave the tip off to the Velacherry police, has not yet been traced’.
