Adyar traffic police later identified the student as R Karthik Narayanan, a second-year BA student in a private college in the city. He is the son of a television actor Ramesh and a resident of Mylapore. He was accompanied by a girl during the incident, said police sources.

While Karthik sustained a minor injury on his right leg, the other person in the car, Srushti (22), a fashion technology student, escaped unhurt. The girl is said to be a native of New Delhi.

The front portion of the car was completely damaged in the crash and was later towed to the police station. Police said that both of them were drunk. The incident took place just past midnight on Monday when they were returning from a pub in Teynampet. However, sources said there were two more women in the car and their friends followed them in two other cars.

While Karthik Narayanan was booked for drunk driving and overspeeding, he was later released on bail. However, police have recommended for the suspension of his driving licence, said sources in the department. The incident comes close on the heels on a Magistrate court levying fine on actor Jai for similar charges and cancelling his licence for six months.
