BJP may go for Amaran again

The state BJP unit may field Gangai Amaran again in the RK Nagar by-election, according to party sources. “We nominated the music composer last time considering his popularity. He can be picked again for contesting in the key by-poll this time. However, the opinions of national level leaders will be sought,” said party functionaries.

Vanathi Srinivasan, state secretary, state BJP unit told DT Next that the unit is holding a meeting on October 23 and a decision regarding the by-election will be taken.

When asked about the possibility of giving chance again to Gangai Amaran, Vanathi said, “We will pick candidates in accordance with the political situation before the elections and we will officially announce the candidate soon. Further, we will seek opinion from Gangai Amaran on contesting elections.”

Meanwhile, political observers say that though it will be difficult for the BJP to gain foothold in the RK Nagar, it should strive hard for winning the election by conducting high-octane election campaigns. Ravindran Duraisamy, a political analyst, said that BJP is receiving poor response in the state. If Gangai Amaran is picked for facing election, the national leaders should come down to strengthen his campaign.”

However, the music composer and probable BJP candidate was unreachable for comment.

It may be noted that the RK Nagar Assembly constituency fell vacant following the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa on December 5, 2016 and subsequently a by-poll was scheduled on April 12, 2017, but the Election Commission rescinded the poll, after it received many complaints of bribing of voters and involvement of large-scale money for the same.
