Corporation clears 80 tonnes of pattasu waste

While festivals are joyous occasions, these celebrations spell extra work for the city Corporation and its conservancy workers.

Over 80 tonnes of firecracker waste was collected by the conservancy workers of the Greater Chennai Corporation, a day after Deepavali celebrations on Wednesday. On an average, the civic body collects 5300 tonnes of garbage daily. 

After Deepavali, 19,000 conservancy workers collected an extra 80 tonnes of residual cracker waste. In accordance with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) directives on the management of hazardous waste, the extra 80 tonnes of cracker waste was given to a private waste management firm to be disposed scientifically. 

Reports revealed that last year, an additional 67 tonnes of firecracker waste was cleared, after the festival, witnessing an increase in the quantity of crackers burst in the city. Before Deepavali, during the festival of Ayudha Pooja celebrations in September end, the Corporation collected an additional 420 tonnes of waste, apart from the daily quota of 5,300 tonnes.
