Soap godown catches fire, one dead

A 55-year-old man was killed after his oil and soap packaging unit, in Urapakkam, caught fire on Thursday afternoon, police said. The deceased, Vijayakumar from Hasthinapuram, was with helper Saravanan, who escaped with minor injuries.

Fire service personnel said that thinner, one of the soap ingredients, kept in another room could have have caught fire leading to the accident while, onlookers said that sparks from crackers burst in the area would have caused the accident. Short-circuit is also suspected to have caused fire. 

Though fire personnel from Guduvanchery station rushed to the spot, Vijayakumr couldn’t be saved as the fire was brought under control only after an hour. The smoke emanating from the building engulfed the entire region. 

In Nemilchery too, a scrap shop caught fire due to Deepavali crackers while in Perungalathur, six bikes went up in flames in suspicious manner at Kamarajar Nagar. Tambaram police are investigating to see if it was the work of miscreants. 

Another fire accident was reported at a restaurant in Tambaram due to leak in the LPG tube and eight people working inside escaped with minor injuries.
