After having offered to volunteer in the search for Luke two-and-a-half months ago, Vijaya Narayanan (53), an animal welfare activist in Besant Nagar, finally received a call on Saturday night.

The dog belonging to the German globetrotting couple Steffan Kaggrah and Janin had allegedly been stolen near the Marina Beach, during the couple’s short stay in the city. They tried everything possible to search for the dog and even announced a handsome reward for those finding it, but later returned to Germany.

As news spread, several other activists tried to trace the missing dog. They stuck posters across the city, distributed pamphlets and flooded social media with images of the missing dog.

Vijaya continued her search in a methodical manner. “I had advertised in various newspapers and put up posters wherever I could, covering the entire city. We distributed flyers to everyone,” she said. On Saturday, she got a call, which changed everything. “The man who called said he has a dog that resembled the picture on the posters that I had put up. When I saw the picture, I was sure it was Luke,” Vijaya remarked.
