The kid, who was identified as Kavya, was playing in front of her house in Bharathi Nagar Second Street on Tuesday.

Her mother Jayanthi, who works as a housemaid, was inside the house. Around 7 pm, Jayanthi went to check on the child but couldn’t find Kavya in the street. Jayanthi immediately informed her husband Venkatesan, a daily wage labourer. The couple enquired with the neighbours and searched in the locality before filing a complaint at Villivakkam police station.

Meanwhile, passersby noticed a girl child lying in a pile of garbage in the area and alerted the police. Immediately, the body was recovered, and the police confirmed that it was the missing

child, Kavya.

Police sources said that the girl’s body had no injuries but there was froth in her mouth, leading to more suspicion. The body was sent to the Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) Hospital for post-mortem. While police have ruled out the theory of sexual abuse, an inquiry is on.

Police said they are investigating whether she was murdered by some men under the influence of liquor in the locality. Police sources also added that Venkatesan’s neighbours are also being interrogated as there was a quarrel between them recently.
