I always wished to work in a hospital environment. Though medicine is not my forte, I have a high interest in physiotherapy. What can I expect in the study and tell me the scope for a physiotherapist? (Ramya G. R)
Great! You sound pretty sure of your career choice. As a physiotherapist, you will assist and help people to rehabilitate their physical movement. Physiotherapist deals with injured or disabled so that they get their movements right and regain the lost strength in any part of the body.
The Physiotherapist has to apply to have in-depth anatomical and nuances of bones, muscles and nerves and musculoskeletal knowledge. The therapy that covers exercise, massage, stretching and mediation is both preventive and cure-focused.
Along with medical skills, one needs to develop compassion, empathy, friendliness, and patience. You need communication skills to build good rapport to take you close to people. You can’t shy away from such closeness as you need to deal with patients through physical touch.
There are both diploma and a bachelor degree in Physiotherapy. Though one could begin with a diploma, a degree is preferred. Both the hospitals and people choose degree holders when it comes to getting treatment. One can also move up to specialize in two-year Master of Physiotherapy.
The course is highly practical, and placements are ensured. It is a profession of high employability despite fewer years of study. Today’s lifestyle and new forms of diseases have given rise to physiotherapists. The demand is on the increase and jobs for physiotherapists are booming.
You will find jobs in community health centres, mental health centres, nursing home and government and private hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports clinics and sports teams, fitness centres, in the homes and institutes of physically challenged and you could also run your own clinics.
A career in sports is hard to come by. If you are a sports enthusiast, a degree and high individual professionalism you stand a chance to be employed as a physiotherapist for individual athletes and teams.
There are many invalid conditions treated through physiotherapy. They are spinal and joint such as arthritis, post-accident treatment, pains of all types, problems affecting children such as cerebral palsy and spine bifida, pregnancy-related issues, stress, work-based discomforts and palliative care.
It only affirms that Physiotherapists should be trained personnel even in beauty parlours and salons. Two weeks ago, a Delhi man Ajay Kumar suffered nerve damage and dipped to paralysis after a neck massage by the barber that went wrong. A ‘neck crack’ that is common after a haircut turned fatal. The man was kept under mechanical ventilation. With other health complications that have become part of humans, a ritual like neck-crack or neck message should be seriously considered. Only a person trained in physiotherapy will know how to administer such services without damaging neck joints and surrounding tissues, muscles or nerves and avoid causing bilateral diaphragmatic paralysis like in this case.
It is a profession that makes invaluable contributions to a person’s quality life. Even serious health problems are treated skillfully. As a Physiotherapist, you also earn equal respect like that of doctors.
As a qualified physiotherapist, you not only earn a good salary, you also dedicate yourself to the society to gain rich physical and mental benefits.
