Her father Shanmugam (48) works as a software engineer at Polaris and is presently in Canada for an onsite project, while mother Renuka is a housewife. The couple has two other children, Nivedha (20) and a minor son (16). While Renuka and Nivedha were at home and suffered burns, the son had gone out to meet his friends, when the incident took place. Police said that Induja and Akash had got to know each other when they studied at the Guru Nanak School in Velachery from Class 9 to 12. After completing school, while Induja went on to pursue her engineering degree, Akash joined Asan Memorial College in Medavakkam. However, he dropped out of college midway and could not complete his degree. After college, Induja joined a small software firm run by her father’s friend as an intern and was getting trained there.

Akash’s father Muthukumar is a social worker, while his mother Kala is a housewife. He has two older brothers. The eldest son, Ganesh, runs a hostel in Velachery where Akash helped him out, while his other brother Vignesh is pursuing his LLB in Andhra Pradesh.

According to police, the two kept in touch after school and Akash visited her home once in a while. It was during one such casual visit two weeks ago that Renuka informed him that her family had started looking for an alliance for Induja since she had completed her BTech and secured a job in a software firm.

“Akash, who nurtured a secret liking for Induja, got upset over the development and allegedly told Induja of his feelings for her. However, she rejected his proposal, leading to an argument between them, during which he warned her of dire consequences,” police said.
