Police said when the child’s mother Selvi (20) from Arasur village in Tiruvallur District had gone to the toilet, two burqa clad women-Ramzan Begum and Regina Begum from Puducherry- grabbed the six-day-old male child from the ninth ward of the hospital and fled. But the patients present there on noticing this created an alarm following which, private security guards Yogaraj and Rani chased the woman and secured Ramzan Begum at the hospital entrance and retrieved the child while the other women escaped.

The people present there reportedly beat up the woman before handing her over to Royapuram police.

Based on a complaint by the hospital RMO Anitha, Ramzan was arrested. During the inquiry, she reportedly told the police that she had abducted the child on a promise that she would be paid Rs 10,000. Police suspect the role of a bigger gang behind Ramzan and questioned her further. It may be noted that child was rescued within eight minutes of its abduction.
