The accused, Ramalingam (59), was arrested based on a complaint filed by Sheela (28), an MBA graduate from Devakottai. Police said that Sheela got introduced to Ramalingam, an employee of a real estate firm in Kodambakkam, through a common friend.

Ramalingam told her that he knows people in IIT-Madras and asked her to pay Rs 1 lakh to get her a job on the campus. Sheela gave him the amount in June this year, but there was no response from Ramalingam since then.

Police grilled him and found out that the allegations levelled against him are true. He has been remanded in judicial custody. Ramalingam is a resident of Mudichur and he targets people looking for a job and cheats them, said police officials.

Meanwhile in another incident, a 38-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging at her house in Dasarathapuram on Saturday night allegedly over mounting debt. The deceased, Rathina Devi, was troupe dancer who worked in films.

Her husband Venkatesan died a year ago, while her son Manikandan works at a retail showroom.
