Pillars for Port-Maduravoyal Expressway on Cooum to be realigned: NHAI
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is to float a fresh tender after 11 years for the incomplete and long pending Port-Maduravoyal elevated expressway project. NHAI officials say that the detailed project report will be completed in a month and there is not much possibility to realign the existing blueprint. However, pillars built on the Cooum river are likely to be demolished.

NHAI sources said that the 19 km-Elevated Four-lane Corridor Project (EFLCP), for which works were taken up from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal some 11 years ago to divert the container traffic from arterial roads and ease congestion within the city is yet to take off. Sources added that Union transport minister Pon Radhakrishnan held a meeting with NHAI officials a couple of months ato and instructed them to prepare a blueprint by the end of December.
“We are in the process of preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and as of now, there is a slight change in the existing blueprint.
We also plan to extend the expressway by 10 km and connect it with the outer ring road via Poonamallee near Nazarethpet (NH4) from Maduravoyal,” said an engineer of NHAI, seeking anonymity. When asked, whether pillars passing through Cooum river will be demolished and reconstructed along the roadside, the engineer replied, “there will be no much change.”
Daniel Robinson, programme manager, Chennai City Connect, said, “If the officials accelerate the works, it will be good for city’s road infrastructure.
It will also pave the way for more companies to invest in industrial sectors.” A senior engineer said, “All the stakeholders, including NHAI, SH, Union road transport and other officials, are preparing a DPR, after which a tender will be floated either in January or February 2018.” There is a possibility for them to continue the halffinished works in May, the official added.
Project Plan
- Project sanctioned in 2007
- Foundation laid in 2009
- Estimation cost: 1,800 crore
- Elevated Expressway starts from Chennai Port and ends in Maduravoyal interchange
