A dry Christmas eve looms ahead for Chennai
The Election Commission’s announcement on Friday on the bypoll to the RK Nagar constituency to be held on December 21, followed by the counting and results on December 24, has alarmed hotels and pubs across the city. The reason? It seems that there will be four dry days across Chennai district during the period, including Christmas Eve!

Reportedly, all wine shops will be closed two days prior to the by-election (December 19 and 20), as well as December 21 and 24, which has also left those planning a big Christmas celebration with friends in pubs, in a quandary.
Vikram Cotah, COO, GRT Hotels and Resorts, said, “We just recovered from taking a massive hit due to the highway liquor ban, and now this. Without an Xmas eve party, December just doesn’t feel the same.”
Many youngsters in the city are already planning to spend that entire weekend skipping town to travel to Puducherry or Bengaluru. “December is that time of the year when business booms for restaurants and bars, but so many people are already making plans to leave town thanks to the multiple dry days. Why couldn’t they hold it in January, after the festive season is over? But we have to respect the government and comply with the rules,” said Arasu Dennis, associate and consultant at pubs like Thirsty Crow, BOATS and Sudaka in the city.
