The lorry belonged to V Gopal, who is in the business of transporting sand and he claimed that the lorry was going to fetch m-sand from a village near Salavakkam. Gopal claimed that Vishnu was a part time driver.

The driver’s mobile number remained switched off throughout the night and he surrendered at Chengalpattu station on Friday afternoon. He was later handed over to the Palur police. It is not clear whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol when the fatal accident happened as he reportedly had used extreme right of the road while negotiating a curve on the dark stretch between Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram.

The two injured sub-inspectors were lying on the deserted road for more than 30 minutes before a motorist alerted the police and who called on ambulance. By the time the ambulance arrived, the two – special SIs Venkatesh and Bhuvaneshwari – attached to the technical wing of the Kancheepuram police, were dead, police said.
