Spate of accidents in city claims five lives

Three people, including a 68-year-old woman, were fatally knocked down in two accidents involving government buses in the city.

In the first incident, two employees of a glass manufacturing firm were fatally knocked down by a government bus near Sunguvarchatram on Tuesday. The incident took place when Balaji (25) of Neyveli and Naveenkumar (26) of Tiruttani were on their way to work from their place in Sunguvarchatram. Meanwhile, a Kancheepuram-bound government bus (Route No: 76C) rammed their bike from behind. In the impact, the two fell on the road and suffered grievous injuries. 

Passers-by rushed them in an ambulance to Sriperumpudur Government Hospital, but both were declared dead on arrival. Sunguvarchatram police are investigating. In another incident, a 68-year-old woman was run over by a government bus at Perungalathur Erikarai bus stop on Monday night. The deceased Kandhammal was riding pillion while her grandson Gopi (22) was riding the bike from their relative’s house in Tambaram Sanatorium to Peerkankaranai. When they reached Perungalthur, an SETC bus proceeding towards Senkottai hit the two-wheeler from behind and ran over Kandhammal, killing her on the spot. However, Gopi escaped with minor injuries. Chromepet traffic investigation police have registered a case and arrested the bus driver Karthikeyan. 

Woman fatally knocked down by car 

A 54-year-old woman, who was hit by a car on East Coast Road (ECR) near Kovalam on Monday evening, died at a private hospital without responding to treatment. The victim is identified as Kanageshwari, wife of Boopalan, a fisherman. The incident took place when she tried to cross the road. Her body was sent to Chengalpattu GH for post-mortem. 

Man run over by vehicle 

A 25-year-old private firm employee was fatally knocked down by an unidentified vehicle on Tambaram- Maduravoyal bypass road in the wee hours of Tuesday. The victim, Vijayaraghavan (25) of Thanjavur, was on his way to Vanagaram from Tambaram for work. Passers-by noticed Vijayaraghavan lying in a pool of blood and sent him to hospital in an ambulance. But he was declared brought dead.
