According to NHAI officials, the Grand Southern Trunk Road (NH-45) stretch from Chennai to Dindigul is a significant National Highway, connecting the city to the southern and western parts of the State. This Highway was developed by NHAI in different sections, out of which, development of TambaramTindivanam Project Highway as a four-lane road was undertaken.

“The toll collection in the section began during 2005 and the concession will end in November 2019. The stretch between Tambaram and Chengalpattu has become congested and it may be one of the densest, from the city,” said an engineer of NHAI. As a routine, people have to wait for more than two hours to cross this stretch at peak hours and the situation worsens during holiday and festival seasons as this is the prime route to south Tamil Nadu, he added.

Another engineer said the stretch has only four lanes with plenty of local traffic from villages on both the sides of the road, with the median opening in 20 locations, causing frequent traffic jam.

There are nine suburban railway stations along the road, resulting in pedestrians criss crossing the Highway. “Moreover, the average journey speed on this corridor is 24 km per hour, which is far below the standard of a National Highway,” he pointed out.

When contacted, a top official, NHAI, said, “The DPR is under way for constructing the elevated stretch between Tambaram and Chengalpattu. After completion of the DPR, we will seek permission from the state government by submitting reports.” However, construction of the elevated corridor might start by the end of 2019, the official added.
