Commenting on the situation in Chennai, senior Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS) officials said that rooftop restaurants and bars are not in general allowed in Chennai especially if made with inflammable materials. “Fire safety licences are not provided for temporary roofing structures if they are used for commercial purposes. Despite the ban, some restaurants and bars, especially along ECR and in neighbouring Mahabalipuram, have come up and we deny licences to such outlets when they come to our notice,” the official said.
