According to MTC officials, though there is no plan to operate additional buses, as all main areas already have proper bus services, considering the celebrations, some buses would be diverted to the places like Marina and Elliots beaches, ECR and other spots to handle the extra crowd.

“It is a fact that visitors, who celebrate the festival beyond 11 pm, will have their vehicles.

However, we will operate only a small number of buses, targeting those who may take cabs, autos and trains,” said an MTC official.

Meanwhile, auto and cab drivers are also preparing to earn a fast buck on New Year’s eve. S Balasubramanian, general secretary, Auto and Taxi Owners Association, South Chennai, said, “We along with cab drivers will be on duty throughout the night of Sunday to take passengers.” Metro trains will also run up to half past midnight on New Year eve.

The services will be extended up to 00.30 hrs on January 1, 2018 (December 31 midnight), a release from the CMRL said.
