When Rajinikanth, on Sunday, announced his entry into politics, the public were happy that they are getting another option apart from the existing Dravidian parties. Professor Ganapathy P said that Rajini is confident because he has clearly studied the law of the land. “His approach has been systematic. He knows the difficulties and the strengths,” said the academician. Gowri Shankar Ranganathan, senior finance professional in a leading software company, concurred, “I think he has been preparing all these days. I am sure he hasn’t taken politics for fame and money that he had already earned. His aim is apparently to correct the system. Right now, a person like him is very necessary. And I think he will continue to be honest and transparent come what may.” Many, like entrepreneur Maaria Kulsum Tanveer, hope that Rajini brings about a change. “When so many can enter politics why not him! I just hope I’m not disappointed.”
However, there are some lingering doubts among the public. Faheem S, MD of a city-based start-up, said, “Rajinikanth is a good human being and he is admired for his humbleness and humility, which is a very wrong ingredient for a powerful leader. He is not known for being aggressive. I really don’t understand how he’d take politics forward. But I’m sure about one thing – with him and Kamal Haasan on the cards, Rajini is going to win for sure. The winning part will solely be based on the number of fans, and not for the quality of governance.”
There is also anticipation on Rajini’s political affiliations, said activist Archana Sekar “I am not sure if I should be hopeful that there is an alternative to the AIADMK and DMK or be disappointed that there is yet another cinema star in politics. Though Rajini is starting his own party, we don’t know if he will tie up with the BJP. Until there is clarity on his political affiliations, we can’t be too hopeful,” she pointed out.
Tamil Nadu has a long history of cinema stars ruling the state. This trend must end, felt entrepreneur Sajeevan P. “Enough of actors taking the lead, just because they have mileage through acting! This is a shame to our state. What vision does Rajini have for the state apart from removing corruption from the system? Our state cannot develop until we have a leader who has a deep knowledge about politics and people,” he remarked.
