He had met with a accident early in December, which affected his vision, after the bony orbit surrounding his right eye got damaged. Thanks to the doctors at the Stanley hospital who performed an optic nerve decompression, an endonasal endoscopic procedure, following which, he has now recovered completely. A father of three children, Ramesh was the sole bread-earner of his family. His accident on December 7, had left his family devastated.
“Following his accident at 7:30 pm, he was rushed to Stanley hospital where he was initially given treatment in the trauma ward, however, we learnt that his vision was deteriorating,” said Dr S Muthuchitra, Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology.
Following an Ophthalmic evaluation, it was found that his right side optic nerve was affected, causing the deteriorated vision, the doctor said, adding that a team of doctors from various departments, including ENT, Anaesthesiologist, Ophthalmology and the like observed his vision for around 15 days.
“The patient had suffered a blow so bad that it affected his vision completely. It not only affected his perception, but that of light too. However, over the course of the treatment, an improvement in short distance vision and a moderate improvement in his long-term vision was observed,” said Dean, Dr Ponnumbula Namasivayam. “Such cases are seen at many hospitals; however, it may be noted that only an early referral can help prevent one from losing his vision.
Even though he had almost lost his vision, it was saved due to his timely arrival at the hospital,” the dean added. The patient has recovered well and can return to supporting his family, one of the doctors stated.
