Catering to this need is ‘Amico’ an app developed by developed by Prasanth Krishnan, who was living in the US, but is currently based in Chennai.

“I have found it difficult to meet new people and make friends when alone or when I have moved to a new city - very few tools, apps etc., exist outside of youth hostels or tour groups. We are all familiar with the wide variety of apps to help us date and create relationships, but very few apps exist to make new friends. This was the inspiration to create Amico,” he says.

How does the app (which is free to download) work? “The app is ad hoc (allows one to improvise). An individual can create, search, and attend any event of their interest. If someone is new to Chennai, they can create an event that will be visible to anyone who has installed Amico.

The app allows one to search by categories of interest, such as social, outdoor, business, etc. Sharing an event with your friends and family members is possible via various platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. It is also possible to create a public or invite-only event,” Prasanth explains.

Within a few weeks, Amico has seen over 1,000 downloads – mostly from users in Chennai. How does it compare with dating apps? “People are already in a relationship, or depend on their colleagues or old friends from school to hang out with – I want to change this, have a more sociable world where we meet and talk to new people and experience new things.”

Krishnan is also conducting a few events to popularise Amico and spread the word. “We are hosting all the time and trying to get people to attend them. Right now, we are focused on connecting people with each other through events.”
