The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday night, and went viral within hours after the video clip showing the police personnel assaulting the youth surfaced.

At 11.30 pm on Tuesday, when Karthik (26), a software engineer, was standing outside his house on Mathiazhagan Street, a sub-inspector, also named Karthik, and a constable on night rounds questioned why he was standing on the street in the late hours.

When he told the personnel that he just stepped out from his house, the SI allegedly told him that it was prohibited. An argument erupted, following which the SI allegedly beat Karthik with his lathi. However, neighbours joined in support of the techie and called the emergency helpline, 100.

As the matter escalated, an assistant commissioner and Madipakkam station inspector reached the spot to placate talks with the neighbours.

They allegedly refused to accept the complaint but assured that internal action would be taken against the SI. After the video went viral on Wednesday, a senior officer with Chennai police said sub-inspector Karthik has been transferred to Anna Square police station.
