The incident took place around 11 am on the busy Pillayar Koil Street. A short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire. This resulted in the blast of one of the cylinders kept inside house due to which the glass window panes of the adjacent flats too got shattered. The fire spread panic among the residents who came out and gathered on the street.
On information, fire personnel from Ashok Nagar and Guindy rushed to the spot and put out the fire in an hour. “Five more cylinders were in thatched enclosure and if they had burst too, it would have caused severe damage to the other buildings,” said a fire official.
The house belongs to Hema Bindhu, a flower vendor and BJP functionary in the locality, while her husband Mohan is also said to be a politician. The couple lived in one of the houses and had rented out the other portion. MGR Nagar police have registered a case.
