Police said Ramesh (46), a native of Thiruvannamalai now working as a car driver in Qatar, was detained at the station on Sunday night after which he was sent home on Monday.
According to police sources, Ramesh had consumed alcohol during the flight. Then, he called the air hostess and asked for a lighter to light cigarette. But the crew member reminded Ramesh that smoking was not permitted inside the flight. He was also told that he should wait till he lands in Chennai to smoke.
But Ramesh entered into an argument with the airline staff, and also began disturbing the fellow passengers on board with his ruckus. He also asked for lighter from other passengers as well. Soon, the pilot contacted the Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Chennai and informed about the incident. When the flight landed at Chennai Airport around 10.40 pm, CISF personnel secured Ramesh and handed him over to airport police station, where he was detained for the entire night.
In the morning, after he came out of his drunken stupor, Ramesh started apologising for what happened on the flight. After proper advice, the police personnel sent him home on Monday. They also got a written statement from him regarding the incident.
