IT employees want better vigilance on OMR

The IT employee was allegedly hit on the head with a rod by unidentified men when she was riding her two-wheeler at 2.30 am on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). She suffered grievous injuries in the attack, and was robbed of her valuables including the two-wheeler on which she was travelling. 

The OMR has over the years become an IT hub with many people from other states residing along the stretch. “This is not the first incident where an IT employee came under attack while travelling along the stretch. We are planning to approach all the police stations on this stretch to find a long-term solution,” said Vasumathi from Forum for Information Technology Employees (FITE). 

The question that linger after the recurrence of such an incident is why a female employee was allowed to leave the office alone at that time when many IT companies claim to have strict regulations especially for the safety of female staff. 

“After the murder in Siruseri a few years ago in which an IT employee was killed while she was returning home, most of the top IT firms are stringent with their regulations. No female employee is allowed to leave for home alone after 8 pm,” said Sujith Kumar, an HR professional. 

However, he added, the smaller firms do not take these safety measures seriously. “Every IT company has an orientation session for all the employees where they are given guidelines. But they are not taken seriously. Most of employees think that nothing can happen to them. Many employees even tend to walk around with their ID cards, even after they are out of the office. Many of these accused persons keep a close watch on the target, and ID cards give enough details about the person,” he added.
