At around 1 am on Wednesday, some of the neighbours were alerted by an unusual noise. When they checked, they noticed that a man, aged around 25 years, was trying to break the door of the house. Sensing trouble, the man too to his heels in a bid to escape, but local residents chased and caught him.
Sources said the enraged public thrashed him so badly that he died. But the police noted that it was also possible that he could have accidentally fallen into the drain and became unconscious. After receiving alert about the matter, Chengalpattu Taluk police team rushed to the spot and took him to nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on the arrival. Police have registered a case (174) and investigating. The cause of death can be confirmed only after receiving the autopsy report, police said.
