According to sources, smoke was billowing from the All-in-One supermarket on the third floor of the mall on Dr Radhakrishnan Salai around 11.45 am. After Fire and Rescue Services Department was alerted, a fire tender from Mylapore fire station rushed to the spot and doused the fire within 30 minutes.
It was difficult even for the fire service personnel to enter the shop, which was filled with smoke by then, to ascertain the cause of the fire. Later, officials said that a short circuit had triggered the fire. There were two persons in the shop, one of whom was found lying unconscious. He was rescued and rushed to the hospital.
The Citi Centre Mall was opened in 2006 and houses a multiplex as well as many retail outlets. After the incident, officials claimed that the building was fire safety compliant. This is the first fire incident reported in the mall.
In May last year, a major fire had gutted the Chennai Silks showroom in T Nagar, after which the highrise buildings flouting fire safety rules were investigated by the City Corporation.
