According to official sources, a plan to build storm water drainage along the GST road from Guindy till Perungalathur was devised. Accordingly, water flowing from Tambaram market towards the Tambaram bus terminus was to be linked with the yet-to-be constructed drainage on the GST road. While work between Guindy and Tambaram was taken up and completed, it soon got stalled after covering about 100 metres in Tambaram.
During the rains last year, the road was completely water-logged. The relaid road also got damaged soon after. Following that, revenue officials from Kancheepuram inspected the stretch and ordered the SWD work to be completed soon. However, work was has not resumed till date.
“It is really hard to do business during rain. People do not visit the market as the road is fully clogged by water,” Jayachandran, who runs a fruit stall, said. Even motorists are facing a hard time due to the delay in the project completion. Nandha Kumar, a daily commuter, said, “During last year rains, I had a very tough time travelling through the stretch.” When contacted, a State Highways department, which is responsible for maintaining the GST road, said steps would be taken to finish the pending work soon.
