According to sources, the shop was previously functioning on Thirumudivakkam Main Road, where it reportedly received only poor patronage. The authorities then decided to shift the shop to Amman Koil Street to increase the revenue. Sources said the new outlet was scheduled to be opened on Tuesday.

However, the residents said that they opposed the plan from the time it was proposed and insisted that a liquor retail shop should not be opened near a temple, as it would create disturbance to the people. But the authorities ignored their opposition and rented out a building on Amman Koil street.

In order to open the shop on Tuesday, 750 liquor bottles from the old shop was shifted to the new building by the staff and the supervisor Sivakumar. When the information spread among the residents, nearly hundreds of women stormed into the new shop. They broke all the bottles kept at the outlet. On information, Shankar Nagar police rushed to the spot.

They took 24 persons, including the women, to the police station. However, they were released before late. The supervisor filed a complaint on Tuesday morning. Following the protest, the shop was not opened on Tuesday.
