Stating that students from private physiotherapy colleges are sent every year to the hospital for practice, deputy medical superintendent Dr Dhanasekaran Krishnan said.
“We regularly receive 30 students from Jaya College of Physiotherapy, Thiruninravur, 20 from UCA College of Paramedical Medicine, Chetpet and four students from JKK College, Erode,” he said. The students accompany the physiotherapists to the wards and watch them practice and gain hands-on experience.
“Physiotherapy falls under the Department of Physical Medicine, which has doctors who are qualified in physical medicine, two associate professors and two senior residents, besides seven physiotherapists. The students from private medical colleges who assist the doctors are the reason we are able to provide good service,” Dr Krishnan added. Although students are available on a regular basis – as when one batch goes, the next arrives – the hospital needs trained physiotherapists.
“We have therefore written a proposal to the government to increase the number of posts under the Physical Medicine Department, mainly physiotherapy to ensure better service to all patients,” said an official from the hospital.
