The ride to Airport from Chennai Central Metro would cost as much as Rs 70 and would cost Rs 10 less from the Egmore Metro.

Despite being a circuitous route via Nehru Park, Anna Nagar and Koyambedu, the commuters would be able to reach the Airport from Chennai Central (25 kms) in under an hour which would be cost-effective and would be less time consuming considering the traffic in the city.

The journey time would come down further when the three underground stations, including Thousand Lights, LIC and Government Estate become operational. While a ride to Airport from AG-DMS would cost Rs 50 and would take about 35 minutes, commuters riding to Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) Metro station from Egmore and Central would cost Rs 40.

The CM and MoS flagged off a train from the Egmore Metro station after they threw open Egmore, Chennai Central, Saidapet, Nandanam, Teynampet and AG-DMS underground stations.

Palaniswami along with his cabinet colleagues, party MPs, and Pon Radhakrishnan MoS (Finance and Shipping) boarded the Metro from Egmore and travelled up to Chennai Central.

The 2.7 km Nehru Park – Chennai Central stretch will cut through Nehru Park, Egmore and Chennai Central Metro stations, while the 4 km Saidapet -DMS stretch would include Saidapet, Nandanam, Teynampet and AG-DMS stations.

It would also increase train frequency on Alandur – Central as availability of loop line facility at the Central station would help operate trains on both tracks simultaneously.

Metro Rail authorities added that the rides would be free from Central Metro and AG-DMS due to post-launch trial on Friday and Saturday. Commuters can travel up to Airport from these stations without charges.
