Motorists troubled by dug-up road

A section of the Paapen canal, which takes flood water from suburban areas like Guduvanchery, Vandalur and Perungalathur to the Adyar river got damaged recently. Following this, the SH took up repair works more than a month ago. The officials dug up a big trench in the middle of the Mudichur-Tambaram road near Ganesh Nagar.

Stating that the repair work has overshot its stipulated time, residents say water flowing through the canal is being diverted to a empty ground nearby where it stagnates. “We are not able to drive our vehicles due to the trench.

Officials have been repairing the canal for over a month,” said Gunasekaran, a resident of Ganesh Nagar.

The SH officials said they have sought municipality help to speed up the work, but there has been no proper response from the latter. However, they added that once the canal repair work is completed, chances of flooding during the monsoon season would reduce.

A senior official of the State Highways told DT Next, “The work has not been completed because of a drinking water pipeline which is obstructing the canal’s path. We will be able to proceed only after the pipeline is removed.” Mudichur falling under the Perungalathur town panchayat is one of the fastest growing places in the suburbs.

The neighbourhood is home to nearly 1,200 families.
