Explaining the concept of healthy ageing, the doctors said that it meant not only to live free of disability or disease but also having high cognitive and physical abilities and interacting with others.
With many focusing on living long, the focus on ensuring quality life is lost. “The quality of life is more important than longevity. The components of healthy ageing are physical and mental well-being, social interaction, and a productive role in society,” said Dr R Jayanthi, dean of the hospital.
Stating that the components of health promotion include exercise, nutrition, rest and sleep, she added, “Yoga and relaxation exercises are important for the elderly. On the other hand, nutrition is an important element too, with focus having to be laid on a well-balanced diet, exposure to sunlight and adequate water intake.”
She also stressed the importance of getting five to seven hours of sleep at night. “Avoiding any caffeinated beverages in the evening or at bedtime is also essential. A periodic health check-up should be another aspect to be focussed on. Factors like BP, cancer screening, lipid profile, teeth and the eyes must be checked periodically.”
