City police fulfil 72-year-old’s last wish to meet grandson
It isn’t often that one hears stories of policemen with hearts of gold. But this is one such incident where the Chennai police turned Good Samaritans and helped unite a septuagenarian with his 11-year-old grandson, perhaps for the very last time. For, despite him being estranged from his children, 72-year-old Sathiyaseelan from Choolai was adamant on meeting the little boy.

According to the police, his erstwhile daughter-in-law was not ready for the meeting. She had married Sathiyaseelan’s son in 2006 and the couple had then moved abroad.
A year later they divorced, but, by then they had a son. However, the duo remarried separately and the son has two daughters from the second marriage. Meanwhile, Sathiyaseelan came to know that the daughter-in-law was in the city along with his grandson and they were staying in Chitlapakkam near Chromepet.
He tried to meet the boy, but failed in his attempts. That is when he decided to approach Chennai city police chief AK Viswanathan. Though the other officers did not seem too hopeful as, legally, they were not in a position to arrange or force such a meeting, the City Police Commissioner asked St Thomas Mount DC, MS Muthuswamy to help out, purely on humanitarian grounds.
The assignment was given to Chitlapakkam inspector Ramesh and he, after many consultations, convinced the mother. “The boy was quiet during the 25-minute meeting at the Police station on Thursday evening with his grandparents, who could not hold back their tears of happiness.
It was quite an emotional experience,” an officer said. Sathiyaseelan later thanked the police, saying, “They are not only successfully enforcing law and order, but are also solving social and emotional issues of the public,” in a message to the City police top brass.
