Cops mistaken for thieves thrashed by villagers
Two policemen and a member of the Home Guards in civilian clothes, who were on a late night unofficial trip to conduct an ‘inquiry about a person in the area in connection with red sanders smuggling’, were thrashed by a group of villagers in Nagathamman Nagar in Sholavaram police limits in Tiruvallur district on Thursday night.

A senior police officer in the city police headquarters said the three personnel, belonging to different units of Chennai police, were not assigned to any such task, and that they were doing it on their own. “We are taking action against them,” the officer added.
The injured policemen were identified as Arivuchelvan, a policeman attached to the communal intelligence wing; Muthukrishnan from Esplanade police station; and Perumal, a Home Guard member from Korrukupet police station. They were taken to Stanley Medical College Hospital, Chennai, for treatment.
Police sources said the personnel claimed that they were looking for one Kabir of Nagathamman Nagar under the Sholavaram police station limits, as he was allegedly involved in smuggling cases earlier.
“It looks like they had some other personal agenda, as the three had gone there without informing their superiors and,” sources added.
The police team had reached locality around 8.30 pm in a car. When they could not locate Kabir in the neighbourhood, they tried to question one Karthiravan (27). When an argument broke out the personnel and Kathiravan, more villagers started gathering at the spot.
Sholavaram police said the injured men had departmental identity card. However, the villagers were not sure if they were indeed policemen as they were in plainclothes. The villagers mistook the policemen for thieves and attacked them, sources added.
Meanwhile, the Sholavaram police have arrested Shanmugham, Krishnamurthy, Muniyandi and Nagendran Kumar on charges of assaulting the police personnel.
