The incident came to light after a foul smell started emanating from Habib Rahman’s rented house on Sheik Manyam Road at Kamadhenu Nagar. Rahman had not stepped out since Sunday and on suspicion, his neighbours alerted the police.
When police broke open the house, Rahman’s body was found lying on the bed while his two sons – Mohammed Knife (6) and Rayan (3) – were also found dead. The bodies were sent for autopsy and the initial reports said that all three died due to poisoning.
Neighbours told police said that Habib was dejected that his estranged wife did not visit them when she came to Chennai from Sri Lanka recently. Police also suspect that he might have took the extreme step as he could not meet the expenses with his catering job.
Hailing from Karaikudi, Habib Rahman had fallen in love with Nisha Fathima of Sri Lanka when they were working abroad nearly 10 years ago. They got married and settled in Chennai. Over the years, the couple developed differences due to Habib’s poor financial status.
Two years ago, Nisha separated from him and went back to Sri Lanka. However, she visited them whenever she was in Chennai, said police. Maduravoyal police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
