Marikannan (32), a constable attached to Vepery station and three other police personnel were involved in a vehicle check near the Marina Beach around 12.15 am when the incident took place. Two men from Triplicane, identified as G Vignesh (24) and P Manoj (24), who came from the beach side on a two-wheeler, attempted to move one of the barricades aside.

“The barricade was kept there to avoid vehicle movement. But Manoj tried to remove it so that their bike can get access to Kamarajar Salai. Marikannan, who noticed this, stopped the men from removing the barricade, which led to an argument. The two men, who were in an inebriated condition, also refused to produce the vehicle documents. The verbal fight turned physical and the policeman suffered a fracture on his right hand finger after being attacked by the duo,” police said.

Following this, the other personnel present at the spot arrested the duo and rushed Marikannan, a resident of police quarters in Purusaiwalkam, to the hospital for treatment.
